What the Wix AI website builder actually does, and the one thing it cannot

You describe a business, it builds a whole site in a few minutes, and there are three ways to make it try again. But Wix's own help centre says the AI Website Builder only creates new sites — it cannot be pointed at the one you already have. Here is the honest shape of the tool.

Searches for the Wix AI website builder have gone up sharply this year, and most of what comes back is a ranked list with an affiliate link at the end. This is not that. It is a plain account of what the tool does, what it will not do, and what to check before you accept the design it hands you.

Everything below is from Wix's own help centre and product pages, read on 26 September 2026. Where Wix states a limitation, I have kept their wording rather than paraphrasing it into something softer.

What it actually is

You start a chat. It asks about the business, one question at a time, and every question can be answered directly, handed back to the AI with "Help me answer", or skipped. Then you press Design Site, then Generate a Design, and it builds a whole site from that brief. Wix's own claim for how long is "a few minutes", and that is about right for what is being generated: pages, layout, copy, images, and responsive behaviour, all at once.

That last row is the part the listicles skip.

The sentence worth reading before you start

From the Wix help centre, on creating an AI-generated site:

"you can only use it to create new sites"

It cannot be pointed at a site that already exists. So the AI Website Builder is a starting gun, not a tool you keep. Once the site is generated you are in the ordinary Wix editor, with the ordinary AI helpers for text, images and individual sections — which are useful, and are a different thing from the builder that made the site.

This matters most to the person who already has a Wix site and hoped the new AI would modernise it. It will not. It will make you a second site.

One more lock worth knowing: after a site is created you cannot change it to a different template. Wix's suggested route is to create a new site and move your Premium plan across.

Your three redo buttons

Before you accept anything, you have three distinct ways to ask again, and they are not the same:

  • Regenerate Design starts completely fresh.
  • Tweak Design keeps your brief and produces a new theme and layout from it.
  • Edit the site brief changes the input itself — the profile, the description, the structure, the theme, the layout.

Most people press Regenerate repeatedly, hoping for a better roll. The one that usually helps is the third. A generated design is downstream of a brief, and a vague brief cannot produce a specific site no matter how many times you shuffle it. If the result feels generic, the brief was generic.

What "free" actually covers

You can build with the AI for free and with no card, which is a genuine offer and worth using. What the free tier does not cover is the part that makes a website a website.

Connecting a custom domain and taking payments both need a Premium plan. And at no tier is there a site export — the site is built with Wix's technology and runs on Wix's servers. That is not a gotcha, it is the architecture, and Wix says so plainly; what does and does not come out of a Wix site is its own guide.

Eight things to check before you accept the design

This list is for any generated design, not only Wix's. Generation is fast enough now that the bottleneck has moved: the risk is no longer that you cannot get a site, it is that you accept one nobody has read.

  1. Read the copy out loud. Generated copy passes the eye and fails the ear. If you would not say it to a customer standing in front of you, it does not go on the page.
  2. Check the headings form a real outline. One h1, and h2s that still make sense read on their own, in order, with nothing else. This is also what an answer engine reads.
  3. Click every navigation item. Generated navs sometimes point at pages that were planned and not built.
  4. Look at it at 375px wide. Auto-responsive means it will not break. It does not mean anybody designed the phone.
  5. Count the typefaces. More than two is the most reliable tell of a design nobody edited.
  6. Submit every form. Then check the message arrived somewhere you will actually look.
  7. Read the page title and meta description. Those are the two lines Google shows, and generated ones are often the business name twice.
  8. Find the one photograph that is wrong. There is usually a stock image that belongs to a different trade, and it is the thing a local customer notices first.

None of that takes long. All of it is the difference between a site that was generated and a site that was published.

The comparison, stated once

Wix's AI builder is good at the first minute of a website's life and is explicitly not built for the rest of it. If that is what you need — a whole site standing up from a description, today — it does that well, and the free tier means it costs you an afternoon to find out.

Where DragGo differs is exactly the line Wix draws. Its agent works on the site that already exists: it revises a page you have, on a document you own, and the output is static HTML and CSS rather than something that has to keep running on our servers. There is no export step because there is nothing being held. The longer comparison is here.

That is a real difference and also a narrow one. Plenty of people should use a hosted builder and never think about files again. The people who should not are the ones who have been through a migration once, and have decided that the next site is going to be theirs.

The useful thing to take from this

Generated design is now the cheap part. Judgement is the expensive part, and no builder supplies it — not Wix's, not ours. So the question to ask of any AI builder is not how fast it produces a site. It is what it lets you do on the second day, and who owns the thing on the thousandth. Which model does the generating matters too, and it is a shorter answer than the marketing suggests.
